One of the wonderful things about living in Amsterdam is that everyone speaks English. One of the difficult things about living in Amsterdam is that everything is written in Dutch. This occasionally poses a problem when navigating the market. On one of our first nights here, Joel brought buttermilk home from the market. My mother and I shared a good laugh over his mishap. Maisy made it through the night without a bottle and Joel hasn't made the same mistake since.
Melk is the Dutch word for Milk - an obvious translation. I recently discovered that karne and Verse Volle are not as easily translated. Last week I brought three red cartons of melk home from the market. After all, red is the universal color used to signify whole milk....or so I thought. Apparently in the Netherlands, red is the color for buttermilk and dark blue is the color for whole milk. (lighter shades of blue are used for low fat and skim milk)
Maisy wasn't happy about enduring another night without a bottle, but she did think it was funny that I made the SAME mistake as Joel. I guess I am someone that learns from doing. And don't laugh too hard because if you come to visit I'm going to send you out to buy milk and we will see how you fare!
